Falasarna – Crete island

Falasarna - Crete island

Falasarna is located 59 kilometers west of Chania and 12 kilometers west of Kissamos on the West coast of Crete. It has become a pole of attraction for thousands of travellers all over the world because of its stunning beaches and its crystal clear turquoise blue sea. The beach of Falassarna extends over a very large area (about 3 kilometres from one end to the other) and it consists of several sandy beaches of various lengths. All have a fine sand and none feel crowded even on busy days because they are so wide and long. Falasarna has been voted the most beautiful beach of Crete and is rated as one of the 10 best beaches in all of Europe.

The largest of the beaches is called Pachia Ammos, which means “Coarse Sands” and is a beach a kilometer long, and about 150 meters wide. Pachia Ammos is fully organized with beach bars, umbrellas and sunbeds. The sand is white, while grains of pink sand emerge sporadically. There are services for water sports and beach volley courts. On the south there is the beach of Livadi which is also sandy but the seabed is rocky making it a good choice for snorkeling. On the north side there is another beach, smaller and wilder with no facilities. Nearby there is the chapel of Agia Paraskevi and a spring with fresh water.

The west coast of Crete is known for its winds, and all the Falasarna beaches are great choices for windsurfers so when it’s windy windsurfers appear. Τhe sunset in Falasarna shouldn’t be missed as it is one of the finest in Crete. Falasarna is part of the Natura 2000 network, both due to its variety of flora and fauna and as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Falasarna has also a long and very interesting history as once was a major center of trade. There are remains of a fortified Hellenistic harbour which is now located inland due to a sudden uplift of the West of Crete 1500 years ago. The visit to the archaeological place is free.

To get to Falasarna from Chania is an easy and lovely drive of about an hour and ten minutes along the main coastal road town. There is also a bus service running from the town of Chania.
